In May we celebrate teas from China

Hello Tea Runners,

In May we continue our country-themed boxes, and this time we're highlighting teas from the birthplace of tea itself: CHINA

China is the largest producer of tea in the world by far.  It is estimated that China produced 2.8 million tons of tea in 2018, more than double the output of India at 1.3 million tons. Despite this massive production, only about 10% of this tea is exported and 90% remains in the Chinese market. At Tea Runners we’re proud to bring you some of these rarely exported artisan teas.

Unlike most other countries, China is known for producing the very best teas of all kinds: black, green, yellow, white, oolong, and pu-erh. Because there is so much variety in China and so many teas, it's impossible to represent the spectrum of teas grown in China with just four selections, but we've selected some truly fabulous ones for you this month, including our first yellow tea.

Yellow tea is the rarest of the six classes of tea and only produced in China. It is not commonly found in the North American market.

It is produced in a similar manner to black tea, with sun withering, rolling, oxidation and drying, but the main difference is the sun withering and oxidation stages are much shorter. The result is a lovely tea with a sweet, clean, bright, and floral taste - like a green tea without the grassiness.
